The island of Corsica is blessed with a stunning
coastline and a rich culture. In the north east, Bastia
is typically Corsican and the old town dates from the
15th century. The harbours and fishing villages on the
north of the island such as Erbalunga and Centuri-Port
are unspoilt and many sandy coves offer inviting
lunchtime stops. The west coast of Corsica is a
spectacular mixture of high granite cliffs, rocky inlets
and sandy beaches. The harbour of Calvi is a popular
tourist destination with beautiful architecture and a
superb beach. The stunning scenery extends all the way
down to Ajaccio, the capital of the island and
Napoleon’s birth place. Here a cosmopolitan atmosphere
is created by pavement cafes and stylish shops. At the
southern end of the island Bonifacio and Porto Vecchio
are charming harbours surrounded by stunning coves and
beaches including Tamariccio, Rondinara (an almost-full
circle of sand) and Palombaggia. From here you can also
sail to the Lavezzi Islands. The interior of the island
has much to offer and a visit to Sartene between Ajaccio
and Bonefacio will give you a taste of the history of
the island and the feel for the culture and way of life.
Corsican cuisine is influenced by Italy and France with
plenty of local specialities from land and sea. The
local wines are also to be recommended.
The sailing around Corsica is mostly easy with line of
sight navigation although there are some tricky rocks to
watch for. Westerly winds are normal and strengths are
moderate although headlands can produce some spirited
gusts!
