| Yacht Charter in Tonga: The Vava'u
islands around Tonga are without doubt one of the worlds
best yacht charter destinations. Many of the islands are
uninhabited and completely unspoiled. A sailing holiday
is the perfect way to explore Tonga and its surrounding
islands. The sailing conditions are usually quite gentle
with calm seas and light sailing breezes although the
navigation around the numerous rocks and reefs requires
a degree of concentration and GPS, although useful,
should be used in conjunction with a good degree of
common sense!
The large number of anchorages means that you will
usually be able to find a spot to yourself should you
wish but if you seek company, there are several
restaurants and three resorts on the outer islands.
Neiafu is the 'capital' of Vava'u, overlooking the
magnificent Port of Refuge Bay and it's where all the
main activity of the islands takes place. A Tongan feast
is not to be missed.
Opportunities for diving and snorkeling are endless and
easily accessible. You will find yourself constantly
tempted to dive in to the ever changing colours of the
tropical waters beneith which you will experience an
awesome array of tropical fish and coral.
Every year between June and November, a group of around
300 humpback whales come to Vava'u to mate and give
birth. During this period it is easy to see the whales
close up and they swim near to passing yachts, a truly
exciting experience.
The pace of life is slow with many of the people in the
villages living much as they have for centuries. You are
welcome in the villages and spending time with the
people gives a glimpse of their way of life. English is
widely spoken and Tonga and the Vava’u group really do
deserve their reputation as the “friendly islands”. The
Christian religion is important in Tongan society and
every Sunday the churches fill with spirited song. Don’t
expect to find any shops or facilities open on a Sunday. |
